18SEP2007:

Well, July and August really sucked! Way too hot, unless it was raining. But there's some small progress to show, and things seem to be picking up.

I made these covers, with my brothers help, (wouldn't be doing much at all without his valuable assistance!) to cover the footwell in the cockpit to keep me from falling down into it. 1/2" thick HDPE with Trex for stiffeners underneath. SS deck screws and a finger hole to lift them out when necessary.

Not a very good picture but they're in! Sitting on ledgers of Trex bolted to the sides of the footwell.

The companionway needs a do-over, the teak was kinda splintery and I'll have to crawl through this hole so it probably shouldn't taper.

There we go! I squared it up and sawed it out; period. Also lowered the threshold a bit. Looks much nicer.

I plan to have the companionway and hatch all plastic, no sanding or varnishing; Yeah!!!

Below is some more 1/2" HDPE we ripped into strips, that'll be stacked 3 thick (sandwiching the fiberglass opening) around the companionway. You gotta "break" the edges with a sanding block to remove the curly-cues from the edges after ripping.

Here's an ugly drawing of how it's gonna be; the red thin bits are the existing fiberglass, the black boxes (3 on each side) will be the HDPE the green bits are SS piano hinges and the blue bits are acrylic doors. Not a very good drawing but I think it'll work. The one door will have a small overlapping piece to keep the rain from coming in-between them

The hatch will also be all plastic, brickmold and acrylic to be exact.

The plastic brickmold has a shape roughly like below.

The flat on the bottom will slide on the rails, and the contoured bit will act to keep it centered on the tracks and also act as a drip edge.

I have no idea what the above piece of junk came off of, but the stainless steel angles should make nice clips to hold the hatch onto the tracks! We would've got farther last weekend but are waiting for SS tee nuts from McFeelys and need to pick up more SS deck screws and piano hinge from MSC.

I don't have any pictures but we also removed the genoa winches and stanchions and I have all that ground out to fill in with epoxy according to West's specs. No wonder the overhead is all rotted, there's virtually no bedding under anything and half the hardware is loose!

More later.
